As Art Director for Edutopia at the George Lucas Educational Foundation, I led a comprehensive brand refresh designed to elevate the organization’s voice in education reform. This included a full logo update, the redesign of Edutopia’s print and digital magazine, and a complete overhaul of the website—built on Drupal—which went on to win a 2009 Webby Award. In parallel, we launched a national video storytelling initiative that spotlighted innovative, real-world teaching practices across the U.S.
-
Our target audience spanned K–12 educators, policy makers, parents, and education advocates hungry for practical, proven strategies that improve learning outcomes.

We reimagined Edutopia’s brand from the ground up—introducing a cleaner, more modern identity while preserving its journalistic and human-centered credibility. The Drupal-based website was redesigned for rich media experiences, including the integration of a growing video library. Meanwhile, we built a dedicated in-house production team that traveled across the country, capturing documentary-style footage of schools successfully implementing forward-thinking educational practices.

The rebrand positioned Edutopia as a forward-looking thought leader in education, driving deeper engagement and broader reach. The videos—ranging from classroom case studies to educator interviews—brought stories of impact to life, becoming some of the site’s most-shared content. The new site’s design and functionality were honored with a 2009 Webby Award, and Edutopia’s refreshed identity helped shape the national conversation around what truly works in education.
